The short answer
Luxury Wallpaper Installer removes old wallpaper from Fort Lauderdale homes, including stubborn, layered, and humidity-worn paper. We test each wall, strip the paper and adhesive with the least aggressive method that works, and repair minor surface damage so walls are ready for paint or new wallpaper.
Old wallpaper in a Fort Lauderdale home rarely comes off as easily as people hope. Years of humidity, layered borders, and paper hung straight onto unprimed drywall can turn a weekend project into gouged walls and torn drywall facing. Luxury Wallpaper Installer removes wallpaper for homeowners across Fort Lauderdale, about 5 miles east of our base in Sunrise. We take the old paper down, clean off the adhesive, and leave your walls ready for new wallpaper or paint. The goal is to avoid the kind of damage that makes wall repair take longer than the removal itself.
Why Wallpaper Removal Is Different in Fort Lauderdale Homes
Fort Lauderdale has a tropical climate with no fully dry season. From May through October the air is hot, humid, and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. That moisture works its way into wallpaper over time. Some paper loosens and peels at the seams. Other paper bonds even more tightly as the adhesive cycles through damp and dry spells, which makes it harder to remove cleanly.
Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kitchens get the worst of it. In these rooms we often find mildew behind the paper, seams that have lifted and been glued back down, or vinyl wallpaper whose backing has fused to the wall. Older homes may have several layers, sometimes with a border hidden under a newer pattern. Each of these needs a different approach, and that is why we test before we start pulling.
How We Remove Wallpaper
Every wall is a little different, so we begin with a small test area to see what kind of paper we are dealing with, how many layers there are, and what is underneath. Then we follow a clear process:
- Protect floors, trim, outlets, and furniture with drop cloths and tape, and shut off power to switch and outlet covers we remove.
- Peel off strippable or peelable top layers dry when possible, which keeps water off the wall.
- Score and soften stubborn paper with warm water and a removal solution, or steam it, letting the adhesive release instead of forcing it.
- Scrape gently with wide, flat tools to avoid cutting into drywall paper or plaster.
- Wash off leftover adhesive residue, which can cause new paint to crack or new wallpaper to bubble if it stays on the wall.
- Let the walls dry fully before any repair or priming.
Getting Walls Ready for What Comes Next
Removal is only half the job. Once the paper and glue are gone, we look closely at the wall surface. If old wallpaper was hung on drywall that was never primed, the brown paper face of the drywall can tear and fuzz during removal. We seal those areas so they do not bubble when they get wet again.
We also patch small nicks, fill nail holes, and smooth rough spots. If you are planning new wallpaper, we can prime the walls with a wallcovering primer so the next removal is much easier. If you are switching to paint, we leave a clean, sealed surface that is ready for your painter or for you. Major drywall damage, water damage, or mold beyond surface mildew may need a separate repair before finishing, and we will tell you plainly if we see it.
Scheduling Around South Florida Weather
Humidity affects how fast walls dry after removal and how soon primer, paint, or new wallpaper can go on. During the wet months from May through October, drying can take longer, especially in rooms without good airflow. Running your air conditioning during and after the job helps a lot. The drier stretch from November into April often lets us move from removal to finishing more quickly.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. If a storm is on the way, we will work with you to reschedule so we are not leaving walls half-stripped while you are preparing your home or dealing with power outages.
